She is Hino Rei (Raye in the north American version) meaning 'Spirit of Fire'.  Her mother star is Mars.

Her secret identity is Sailor Mars.  In her previous life she was a member of princess Serenity's court as well as princess of Mars, ruler of a castle named Phobos Deimos.

Her powers deal with fire.

Her strengths are determination and spirit as well as supernatural talents.

She is a Shinto Priestess in ordinary life, which gives her the ability to make ofuda (anti-evil wards), do fire readings to help her locate and understand enemies, and foresee the future.

Rei is a very passionate person with a fiery temper.  She is not a person you want to tick off.  Although she can be sweet if she is your friend, she is honest, and won't hesitate to say what she feels or tell it like it is (even if that means yelling at or insulting the person).  Living alone in a temple with her grandfather, Rei has learned the value of responsibility and hard work.  As a shinto priestess, she can sense evil, do fire readings, make ofuda, and more.  Although she puts up a little of a wall in order to appear solidly strong and together, Rei has a softer, more emotional side that comes out every once in a while.  Rei loves to write songs and sing them.  She feels at home in the spot light as the center of attention.  Rei cares deeply for Usagi, even though she still likes to harass her every chance she gets.  She is very protective of Usagi, willing to mangle anyone who hurts her.  Rei loves to read manga (which Usagi often borrows) as well.  Rei is an intelligent person.  She even goes to a special school which gives her the advantage of not having to take high school entrance exams like the rest of the senshi.  She shares a healthy obsession for 'star searching', willing to go all over just to get a glimpse of someone famous.  Rei is beautiful, but a little bossy at times.  She likes to get her way.  Rei is very determined and tough in a fight.  She will give it all she has and have no fear in doing it.  As sailor Mars, she is a strong offensive fighter with powerful attacks.  Never hesitating too long, Mars is usually one of the first to attack.  Mars can also have understanding and compassion for an enemy if she sees a large amount of pain in them.  She helped Cooan and defended her from attack because she understood her pain.  In summary, although quick tempered and powerful, Rei is genuinely caring and loves to entertain.
