  • The greatness comes not when things go always good for you. But the greatness comes when you're really tested, when you take some knocks, some disappointments, when sadness comes. Because only if you've been in the deepest valley can you ever know how magnificent it is to be on the highest mountain. -- Richard M. Nixon

 Gothic woman walking
THE WARRIOR

This morning my thoughts traveled along
To a place in my life where days have long since gone
Beholding an image of what I used to be
As visions were stirred and God spoke to me
He showed me a Warrior a soldier in place
Positioned by Heaven, yet I saw not the face
I watched as the Warrior fought enemies
That came from the darkness with destruction for me
I saw as the Warrior would dry away tears
As all of Heaven's Angels hovered so  near
I saw many wounds on the Warriors face
Yet weapons of warfare were firmly in place
I felt my heart weeping my eyes held so much
As God let me feel the Warrior's prayer touched
I thought " how familiar" the words that were prayed
The prayers were like lightening that never would fade
I said to God "please the Warrior's name"
He gave no reply, He chose to refrain I asked,
Lord, who is broken that they need such  prayer?"
He showed me an image of myself standing there
Bound by confusion, lost and alone
I felt prayers of the Warrior carry me home
I asked "Please show me Lord. this Warrior so true"
I watched and I wept, for Mother.....
the Warrior-was you!

                          The woman in the ordinary

The woman in the ordinary pudgy downcast girlWomen Waliking

is crouching with eyes and muscles clenched.

Round and pebble smooth she effaces herself

under ripples of conversation and debate.

The woman in the block of ivory soap

has massive thighs that neigh,

great breasts that blare and strong arms that trumpet.

The woman of the golden fleece

laughs uproariously from the belly

inside the girl who imitates

a Christmas card virgin with glued hands,

who fishes for herself in other's eyes,

who stoops and creeps to make herself smaller.

In her bottled up is a woman peppery as curry,

a yam of a woman of butter and brass,

compounded of acid and sweet like a pineapple,

like a handgrenade set to explode,

like goldenrod ready to bloom.

Time When They Were Warriors

I did not fall from the sky

I

nor descend like a plague of locusts

to drink color and strength from the earth

and I do not come like rain

as a tribute or symbol for earth's becoming

dark and open

some times I fall like night

softly

and terrible

only when I must die

in order to rise again.

I do not come like a secret warrior

with an unsheathed sword in my mouth

hidden behind my tongue

slicing my throat to ribbons

of service with a smile

while the blood runs

down and out

through holes in the two sacred mounds

on my chest.

I come like a woman

who I am

spreading out through nights

laughter and promise

and dark heat

warming whatever I touch

that is living

consuming

only

what is already dead.cute green haired girl

   Beautiful Dreamer

                  Beautiful dreamer, wake unto me,
                  Starlight and dewdrops are waiting for thee;
Sounds of the rude world heard in the day
Lull'd by the moonlight have all pass'd away!

Beautiful dreamer, queen of my song,
                  List while I woo thee with soft melody;
Gone are the cares of life's busy throng.

                  Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me!
                  Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me!

Beautiful dreamer, out on the sea,
                  Mermaids are chaunting the wild lorelie;
Over the streamlet vapors are borne,
Waiting to fade at the bright coming morn.

Beautiful dreamer, beam on my heart,
                  E'en as the morn on the streamlet and sea;
Then will all clouds of sorrow depart,

                  Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me!

                                 "Warrior Woman"

Newark in the rain                                 Alien woman walking
is a beautiful city:
the hard black lines
softened by the tender influence
of water and night,
the lights and destruction
seen in soft focus,
now a woman,
all curves and turns.
No edges.

(She told me I was a soldier,
from the sharp strut
to the devastating glance,
the coldest eye.

I told her it was something I'd learned
in the old stone heart of the ghetto:
a defense mechanism
a way for a small girl like me
to be six feet tall,
with combat boots,
camouflage,
and machete.
A way to walk safe in a dangerous city.

I built a shell, I said,
and crawled inside,
protecting softer sides of myself,
hardening my heart
to the sounds of windows and
spirits breaking,
until soon all I could hear
was the sound of my
hard-souled boots
striking the street
in vague approximation of a heartbeat.

But I had never before
been called a soldier.
And this stone statue of a woman
cracked just a little bit,
to hear the admiration in your voice.)

Newark at night
is a beautiful city:
glowing through the grimy,
rain-spattered glass
of elevated trains,
like an aging movie star
in perfect lighting
and soft-focus.
Lines blurred. Timeless. Grand.
Maybe enough to melt the heart.

warrior woman walkingI am a woman without degrees
Yet wise

I am a woman without money
Yet rich

I am a woman without a lover
Yet loved abundantly

I am a woman with only peace in her heart
Yet a warrior

I am a woman betrayed
Yet I trust

I am a woman beaten
Yet I am victorious

I am a woman bruised and battered
Yet I am never broken

I am a woman whose bones have been broken
Yet I am whole

I am a woman held down
Yet I am powerful

I am a woman strangled
Yet I speak freely

I am a woman raped
Yet I am pure

I am a woman with clipped wings
Yet I fly

I am a woman whose heart has been pierced
Yet it grows stronger, larger, more open

I am a woman who cries
Yet I am happy

I am a woman vulnerable
Yet I am invulnerable

I am a woman sexual
Yet I am sacred

I am a woman human
Yet I am divine

I am a woman, breasts, pussy, ass
Yet I am so much more

I am a woman exquisite

With No Immediate Causedeath demon

every 3 minutes a woman is beaten

every five minutes a

woman is raped/every ten minutes

a lil girl is molested

yet i rode the subway today

i sat next to an old man who

may have beaten his old wife

3 minutes ago or 3 days/30 years ago

he might have sodomized his

daughter but i sat there

cuz the young men on the train

might beat some young women

later in the day or tomorrow

i might not shut my door fast

every 3 minutes it happens

some woman's innocence

rushes to her cheeks/pours from her mouth

like the betsy wetsy dolls have been torn

apart/their mouths

menses red & split/every

three minutes a shoulder

is jammed through plaster and the oven door/

chairs push thru the rib cage/hot water or

boiling sperm decorate her body

i rode the subway today

& bought a paper from a

man who might

have held his old lady onto

a hot pressing iron/i don't know

maybe he catches lil girls in the

park & rips open their behinds

with steel rods/i can't decide

what he might have done i only

know every 3 minutes

every 5 minutes every 10 minutes/so

i bought the paper

looking for the announcement

the discovery/of the dismembered

woman's body/the

victims have not all been

identified/today they are

naked and dead/refuse to

testify/one girl out of 10's not

coherent/i took the coffee

& spit it up/i found an

announcement/not the woman's

bloated body in the river/floating

not the child bleeding in the

59th street corridor/not the baby

broken on the floor/

there is some concern

that alleged battered women

might start to murder their

husbands & lovers with no

immediate cause"

i spit up i vomit i am screaming

we all have immediate cause

every 3 minutes

every 5 minutes

every 10 minutes

every day

women's bodies are found

in alleys & bedrooms/at the top of the stairs

before i ride the subway/buy a paper/drink

coffee/i must know/
