Sailormoon is the all powerful leader of the
the Sailor Senshi. Defender of love and justice, she defeats villans for the sake of all humankind. This is certainly true
in the anime, however, in the manga it is quite a different story. Sailor Venus, not Sailormoon, is the leader of the Sailor
Team.
This difference in leadership really makes sence
if one puts into perspective who the Inner Senshi are and what there purpose is. While the Outer Senshi protect the realm,
it is the responsibility of the Inner Senshi to defend the princess. If Sailormoon is the moon princess (and she is) then
she very well can't be the leader of a group who's main purpose it to protect herself! Sailormoon is also easily distracted
from her mission, a failing in any good leader.
In the
first season Sailormoon had many distractions. Her teenage obsession with handsome young men led to her falling into many
of the insipid traps set by Jedite and Queen Beryl. Her goo-goo ga-ga eyes for Tuxedo Kamen (Tuxedo Mask) also kept her from
acting right away. After she learns she is the moon princess, her distraction reaches new levels of obsession. After Chiba
Mamoru (Darien) otherwise known as Prince Endymion, her true love, is taken from her and turned to the side of evil, she wastes
precious time trying to understand his change and bring him back, rather than fighting. In season 2 of the anime, she is not
only distracted by Mamoru's loss of memory of their past, but by a new character, the Moonlight Knight.
Though
it takes her longer to get her act together in the end, Sailormoon does eventually become more powerful (as Super Sailormoon
and later as Eternal Sailormoon) and more mature. Though she seems to start out every season with no power (in season 2 her
tiara refused to work!) she always overcomes these problems and moves on. In season 2 of Sailormoon, her mother Queen Serenity
tells her that "the more she wants to be Sailormoon, the closer she will become to being Princess Serenity again."
This is a change that is less evident in the anime (as the season's
continue, her fuku [senshi uniform] starts to look more like her dress as Neo-Queen Serenity) it is noticable from the begining
of the manga. As her memories and power slowly return, her tiara, and even her very appearance changes until she becomes her
former self. The truth is, most people wouldn't be able to handle this kind of change, nor her constant battle with evil,
and stay sane. It is near miraculous that Usagi still decides to change into Sailormoon. If I were her, I probably would've
given up a long time ago (and I'm sure that if she could do the same, she would have.)
