Tsukino Usagi (Serena), seems like she is an average junior high
school student. This may be true by American standards, but by Japanese standards she is an embarrassment! She is the opposite
of what every good Japanese child tries to be. Rather than be studious and busy, she is lazy and whiny. This may explain why
Sailor Mercury was a more popular character in Japan than Sailormoon.
Usagi
is so much like an average American teenage girl that is almost seems sterotypical for US culture--a fact that I can assure
you frightens me a bit. She reads comic books, pigs out on junk food, and constantly daydreams about boys. She loves video
games and mall trolling. She is happy and bouncy and joyful--what else can one expect from a fourteen year old girl.
Her life seems simple enough, however it is quickly disrupted
by Luna, her black cat guardian and companion. After she is given the magical compact (locket) and screams "Moon Prism Power
Make-Up" for the first time, her life is forever altered as she takes on the role of Sailormoon, powerful leader of the Sailor
Senshi.
And it is in her other forms, that of Sailormoon,
and later Princess Serenity, that Usagi learns of her past life on the moon, and her true love Chiba Mamoru (Darien Shields).
As the years pass, Usagi does grow up some, often giving up her own comfort and happiness to help those who need her. This
is why I think that Usagi is a good leader. She may whine and complain, but when the situation really becomes serious, she
does what she needs to do.
