Princess Serenity and Neo-Queen Serenity are the true royal forms of Tuskino Usagi (Serena-her Japanese name directly translates to mean "Rabbit on the Moon"). It is in these forms that her true power and position are evident and known. As Princess Serenity she lead a life of peace. Living in a large and beautiful palace on the Moon, it was her responsibility as heir to the Moon Kingdom and the Silver Millennium, to learn the ways of her family and continue with her family legacy of protecting their solar system, especially Earth, from evil forces. Under the instruction of her mother, the goddess Selene--original Queen Serenity, that she was studying to be a great ruler. This tutalege was disturbed, however, by the invasion of an evil dark force and the destruction of Earth and the Moon Kingdom. In the anime, it is less clear why the Moon Kingdom was destroyed, other than an invasion that killed the Moon Princess and her true love, as well as all of the Sailor Senshi. A grief-stricken Queen Serenity uses all of her power to seal away the dark forces along with her daughter and her court to send them to a better life in the future. In the manga the story is much more involved. According to the manga, Princess Serenity, always curious and immature by nature, defied her mother and her protector Sailor Venus, by traveling to Earth unsupervised. There she met the handsome crown prince to the Earth Kingdom, Prince Endymion. Taken by her beauty, Prince Endymion soon desired her, and the two of them fell desperatly in love, despite the taboo of a relationship existing between the long-lived members of the Moon Kingdom and the mere-mortal Earthlings. Their romance angered a young Beryl, who was herself in love with Endymion, and she turned to the evil force born from the sun, Queen Matalia, for comfort and power. Queen Matalia who feeds off of pain and anger, used the evil influence she had over Beryl to cause chaos among the people of Earth. Believing that the Moon Kingdom had been sending spies and that they ruled over Earth through a puppet prince, even Endymion's own generals--Kunzite, Nephrite, Jadite, and Zoisite, seemed to turn against him, demanding that he fight for the side of Earth. When a fatal blow is targeted towards Princess Serenity, Prince Endymion throws himself into the line of fire, dying to protect his love. In her bereavement, Princess Serenity takes her own life, using the stone sword meant to protect her as her instrument of suicide. The Inner Senshi sworn to protect her fall shortly after. In anger the Queen, not thinking straight, sealed the Princess, her court, and the evil force away to be reincarnated in the future. The Silver Millennium was no more. After reincarnation as Tuskino Usagi, she finds life and love again in the present. Slowly she remembers who she is, and in a time of extreme peril, during her battle with Matalia in the present, she once again takes the form of Princess Serenity. Much later, in the 30th century, Usagi becomes royal once more, this time as Neo-Queen Serenity. After a great ecological disater, the people of Earth are forced into a deep sleep that lasts about a millennia. It is through the power of the Silver Crystal that Neo-Queen Serenity, the true Messiah and Savior of Earth, rejuvenates the planet, recreating Tokyo as a hub of industry, technology, and artistic expression. With her consort King Endymion at her side, and her young daughter, Small Lady, she rules over Crystal Tokyo in a new Silver Millennium. This peace is soon threatened by another dark force. This force which fled Earth in fear of cleansing from Silver Crystal, traveled to the Tenth Planet from the Sun, Nemesis, and became the Black Moon clan (Nega Moon Family). Neo-Queen Serenity, King Endymion, and the Sailor Senshi were unable to stop the battle in the future. In the the present the battle is actually won by the Inner Senshi, Chibi-Usa/Small Lady (Rini) and Sailormoon, who for the first time takes the form of Neo-Queen Serenity This just goes to show us all that even a sometimes irresponsible, whiny, brat princess has her uses--and can even be a powerful force.
